The importance of local infrastructure funding

By speaking with residents across Parkwood, whether at local events or in casual conversations, I have gained a clear understanding of community interests. Residents are eager to see improvements in local amenities, programs, and opportunities for connection. Together, these insights highlight the importance of fostering a strong and engaged neighbourhood.

Having lived in Parkwood and served as Deputy Mayor, I have firsthand experience of these issues. I have consistently advocated for improvements to community facilities, including upgrades to Hossack Park, the playground, and the bike track, as well as implementing traffic safety assessments near Parkwood Primary and Lynwood Senior High School.

There is still more work to be done. Residents have raised several pressing concerns regarding the local primary school, including inadequate air-conditioning, roof damage, insufficient student support, parking challenges, and traffic issues. Other priorities include:

  • Poor maintenance of verges and footpaths
  • Limited availability of medical services and healthcare
  • Rising cost of living and lack of affordable housing
  • Insufficient community consultation in major decisions
  • Public safety and security concerns

Addressing these challenges requires consistent advocacy. Plans are already underway to upgrade Vellgrove Park Playground and address the school’s infrastructure issues. My commitment is to work alongside the community to strengthen essential services and support long-term development.

A thriving Parkwood depends on strong schools, local businesses, recreation, and public services. By focusing on fundamentals- education, healthcare, housing, safety, and community engagement. We can build a stronger, more connected neighbourhood.
