Nurturing Local Talent Through Schools and Sport

Living in this area, you really see how much local schools shape the sporting talent in the community. Spencer went through Rossmoor Senior High School for his entire high school education. Rossmoor has been a volleyball specialist school for years, consistently winning school cup championships. Even though the school is technically in Bull Creek, it is part of the Rossmoor catchment, and the surrounding bushland adds a really nice natural backdrop.

Just up the road is Willerton Senior High School, a basketball specialist school. Both Rossmoor and Willerton have incredibly talented students, including AFL players, volleyball players, national-level basketball players, and footballers. These schools also maintain top academic performance, with some students achieving in the 99th percentile. The prestige and quality of these government schools make the area highly sought after for families.

Despite the demand, the local school infrastructure is under pressure. Many schools were built for a few hundred students, yet now some primary schools exceed 1,000 students. Because the area is considered more affluent, funding is not always sufficient, so schools cannot always manage upgrades themselves. Years ago, maintenance and infrastructure work were outsourced to a single provider, which made smaller upgrades cost-prohibitive and slowed timelines.

It is exciting to see the Willerton Sports Precinct expanding over the years, with AFL, cricket, basketball, tennis, and netball facilities growing. Being part of a community that values both sport and education is inspiring, even when navigating the challenges that come with government systems.
