Making Education a Priority for Future Generations

After years in local government, I felt that I had achieved more than I ever set out to do. It became clear that the next step for me was focusing on education, sporting infrastructure, and the environment. Those are issues that can only be addressed at the state level, not locally.

Education, in particular, has always been close to my heart. Having children and speaking to friends who are teachers, as well as support staff in schools, I have seen first-hand the challenges facing the system. Poor children in local schools often face obstacles that have been ignored for too long. It felt like the right time for someone to step in and make meaningful, serious change.

My own children are now in middle to late high school. Three of my younger children are no longer in the public system because I did not feel they were receiving quality education. They are now in private schools. While we are fortunate to be able to afford this, not all families have the same option. I strongly believe that public education should be as good as, if not better than, private schools, especially in a state that is growing so quickly.

Even in high-performing schools like Rossmoyne and Willerton, teachers face real challenges. Classes can be overcrowded and disruptive, and the curriculum is packed with material that children may never use in adult life. Many families invest in private tutoring to support their children. I have seen the difference this makes. One of our children went from a D in maths to an A after working with a tutor who could teach in a way he could absorb. It shows how crucial both quality teaching and tailored support are to a child’s success.

Education is not just about grades. It is about preparing future generations to thrive, and that starts with ensuring every child has access to the resources and support they need.
